I initially started the Cooper’s Cake Co. Instagram page in 2018 for fun when I would casually bake when bored. I didn’t post again until the beginning of COVID, so around March 2020. I posted the cakes, cupcakes, and macarons I made with all the spare time I had from being in lockdown. Eventually, it began to gain traction as friends and family would order cakes for birthdays and special events. Soon enough word of mouth helped my little baking business grow. Now I am making around 1-5 cakes per week, and many of my customers are people I don’t know who have found me through Instagram.
What does your day-to-day look like?
Every day is different, but each day I check my social media accounts and post or prepare a post for the following days to come. I try to post on Instagram/Facebook, TikTok, and recently Pinterest. I definitely don’t post as much as I should, but something is more than nothing. In terms of baking, I will do a grocery shop for the week depending on the orders I have and I will pre-bake the cakes a couple of days before the pickup date. I have learned to make everything ahead of time so I am not too stressed out and baking all day. I learned the hard way that it helps to be prepared and organized!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I definitely get inspiration from other baker’s desserts I see on Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, etc. and then put my own personal spin on the designs. Many of my customers also provide detailed requests and working with them really helps me come up with unique designs and ideas for cakes. Other times I just go with the flow and see what happens (this does not turn out 100% of the time lol).
If you had to say, which is your favourite cake you've made so far?
This is such a hard question! Each cake I make is so different, but I would have to say the rose-gold cake with roses, macarons, pink Lindt chocolate, and meringues. I love any cake with flowers and macarons, it really adds an elegant touch.
What advice would you give someone who's interested in starting a business?
A piece of advice for someone interested in starting a business is to just be confident in yourself and your products and not compare yourself to others. Self-doubt is extremely sabotaging! Everyone is on their own journey with their business and your time will come as long as you put the work in.
Also its never too late to start pursuing what you’re passionate about :)
What does living simply and beautifully mean to you?
Following your passions, filtering out the negative vibes, and not taking life too seriously! Also drinking enough water, exercising, and nourishing your body (even though I make cakes for a living haha).
