What is Rattan?

We’ve been obsessed with rattan for a while now but we realized we don’t really know what it actually is.   Since we love our rattan pieces, we thought we’d take a deep dive and figure out what it is (because we know you’re curious too).

Rattan material grows in Africa, Australia and Asia (the majority is grown in Asia).   There are over 600 different species of rattan.   Rattan is a long-stemmed vine that looks similar to bamboo.   The difference between rattan and bamboo is that rattan boasts solid stems while bamboo is hollow.   The core of rattan doesn’t get wasted as it gets used to build furniture/décor.   The skin of rattan is peeled off and used for weaving (known as wicker) while the core is used in making rattan furniture and décor.   In other words, rattan is a material and wicker is a technique of weaving materials together.

Why do we love it?

Rattan is obviously very aesthetically pleasing.   It adds a beautiful natural and bohemian look to your home.   Rattan is very versatile and can be used to create a wide range of products.   We also love the fact that all of the material that comes from the rattan stem gets used, so nothing goes to waste!
